A theme park where wheelchair users do not get parked in the front row, where sensory needs shape the design, and where “accessible” is not a single modified option, it is the whole experience. We sit down with Sharon Newhardt, inclusion strategist at Morgan’s Wonderland and Morgan’s Inclusion Institute, to unpack what ultra-accessible really looks like when you build a destination from the ground up.
Sharon comes to Morgan’s with an extensive background in the themed entertainment industry. Her early career was spent with the Walt Disney Company where she led tours of Disneyland for Guests from around the world with varying abilities. This gave her a unique insight into the world’s tapestry of cultures and experiences, and the challenges navigated by individuals with disabilities.
Following a successful tenure in the themed entertainment industry building shows and rides for Disney, Six Flags, SeaWorld, and parks in Europe and Asia, Sharon took a break from corporate life to educate her son. It was during this time that her advocacy for individuals with disabilities began in earnest with her son and his best friend, who uses a wheelchair. Sharon again saw first-hand the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, their families, and caregivers. One place that was a bright light in this landscape was a place she visited with her son and his friend on its opening day – a new theme park with a mission of inclusion called Morgan’s Wonderland.
Morgan’s Wonderland seemed the perfect place for Sharon to combine her themed entertainment experience and disability advocacy passions. During her time with the organization, she has developed and participated in growing many inclusion mission endeavors including our unique Ultra-Accessible™ Inclusion Training program, which has reached thousands of participants since its inception in 2019. Currently serving as Director and Inclusion Strategist, Sharon oversees all aspects of disability inclusion across the Morgan’s family of entities.
Sharon attended the Maggie Allesee BFA Theatre and Dance program at Wayne State University and holds an Executive Certificate in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion from Cornell University. She has been with Morgan’s for six years.
